Outline

CARMENES is the name of the instrument, the consortium that designed and built it, and of the science project that is being carried out during guaranteed and legacy time observations. Over 200 scientists and engineers of 11 institutions in Spain and Germany have participated in the design, construction and science exploitation of the new "planet hunter". The consortium was built on the basis of a membership parity, with the same number of involved institutions in each country: five in Spain, five in Germany and the Spanish-German observatory of Calar Alto, near Almería in southern Spain, which was operated jointly by the Max-Planck-Gesellschaft and the Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas until 2018.

The CARMENES Core Management Team (CMT) was in charge of the day-to-day administration during the design, assembly-integration-verification and commissioning phases, and included the principal investigators, project scientists, system engineers, project managers and the observatory liaison. There was also a country parity in charges. During the operations phase, the most active consortium body has been the Science Coordination Team (SCT), which includes representatives of the 11 institutions.

The consortium has been a focus of high-tech industrial development, since tens of contracts with industrial collaborators and manufacturers were issued for completing the instrument, and some of our designs are reused by other teams worlwide. Although some hardware had to be bought in the USA or Japan, many components were purchased in Europe in general and Spain and Germany in particular. Some important private collaborators in our two countries, in term of technical relevance and contract amount, were Ecofred, Fractal, Kaufman, Kinkele, NTG, Pfeiffer or Trinos. The consortium also collaborated with ESO on designs of detector cryostats, sorption pumps and the NIR-channel cooling system.

CARMENES was funded by the Max-Planck-Gesellschaft (MPG), the Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas (CSIC), the Ministerio de Economía y Competitividad (MINECO) and the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) through projects FICTS-2011-02, ICTS-2017-07-CAHA-4, and CAHA16-CE-3978, and the members of the CARMENES Consortium (Max-Planck-Institut für Astronomie, Instituto de Astrofísica de Andalucía, Landessternwarte Königstuhl, Institut de Ciències de l'Espai, Institut für Astrophysik Göttingen, Universidad Complutense de Madrid, Thüringer Landessternwarte Tautenburg, Instituto de Astrofísica de Canarias, Hamburger Sternwarte, Centro de Astrobiología and Centro Astronómico Hispano-Alemán), with additional contributions by the MINECO, the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft through the Major Research Instrumentation Programme and Research Unit FOR2544 "Blue Planets around Red Stars", the Klaus Tschira Stiftung, the states of Baden-Württemberg and Niedersachsen, and by the Junta de Andalucía.

In summer 2018, CAHA selected an upgrade of CARMENES as one of the only two projects for new instrumentation at the 3.5 m Calar Alto telescope. Since January 2021, the CARMENES Consortium is carrying out a new 250-useful-night legacy survey and an instrument upgrade, dubbed CARMENES+. CARMENES does radial-velocity TESS follow-up, and CARMENES+ will do so for ESA missions Gaia and, after 2026, PLATO.
